What we aim for
We build to the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA as our target. That is a target we work toward continuously rather than a certification we hold.
What we have done
- Color contrast is measured, not assumed. Every text and background pair used on this site was computed against every surface it appears on. Our brand orange fails AA for body text, so it is used only for large display type, rules, icons and fills — never for body copy, and never on the warm alternate surface. Body links use a darker tone of the same hue that meets AA on both light surfaces, and the dark footer band uses a lighter tone that meets AAA against it.
- Buttons are checked in both directions. A solid brand-orange button takes dark text rather than white, because white on that orange fails.
- Headings run in order, with no skipped levels, so a screen-reader user can navigate a page by structure.
- Every image carries a real alt description, or an intentionally empty one where the image is purely decorative.
- Focus is visible. Links, buttons and expandable sections show a clear outline when reached by keyboard.
- Text is not transformed by styling. Nothing a person wrote is re-cased by CSS, so drug names, journal titles and proper nouns render as written.
- Wide content scrolls inside its own container, so the page itself never scrolls sideways.
- Expandable question-and-answer sections use native HTML, which works without JavaScript and is announced correctly by assistive technology.
Known limitations
- Some tables of evidence are wide by nature. They scroll horizontally within their own container on a narrow screen, which is workable but not ideal.
- The Gurmukhi word ਦੁਆਰਾ renders in whichever Gurmukhi-capable font your device provides. On a device with none installed it may appear as placeholder boxes.
- We link out to journal publishers and government sites whose accessibility we do not control.
